One of the earliest Shelby Cobras ever built joins modern legends at Broad Arrow’s Monterey Jet Center Auction in August.

A key chapter in American automotive history will cross the auction block this summer, as Broad Arrow Auctions presents the 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX 2003—widely recognized as the fourth Cobra ever built—at its upcoming Monterey Jet Center Auction, taking place August 13–14 during Monterey Car Week.

The prototype Cobra, preserved in remarkably original condition and offered after 36 years of single-family ownership, is expected to fetch between $1.5 million and $2 million. It represents one of the earliest examples built under Carroll Shelby’s vision of combining European chassis dynamics with American V8 power. CSX 2003 was assembled at Ed Hugus’ dealership in Pittsburgh, where the earliest Cobras were constructed prior to Ford’s official involvement. Its original Ford 260-cubic-inch V8, manual transmission, and red interior remain intact.

Following its construction, the car was evaluated by Ford engineers—reportedly including Henry Ford II himself—and displayed at events such as the 1963 12 Hours of Sebring. The car’s current owner, Dr. Richard McAdam, acquired it in 1989 and later received Shelby’s personal signature inside the glove compartment at a Ford-hosted event.

Also featured in the auction is a 2011 Hennessey Venom GT, chassis #03 of just 13 produced. The American hypercar pairs a Lotus-based carbon monocoque with a supercharged 725-hp V8 and six-speed manual gearbox.

Adding to the modern performance showcase is the American Performance Collection, a group of six ultra-low-mileage Dodge and Chevrolet models, including a pair of 2017 Viper ACRs, a 2021 Challenger SRT Super Stock, and a 2023 Camaro ZL1 1LE.

The Jet Center sale is Broad Arrow’s flagship event, known for top-tier consignments and record-setting results. Last year’s auction brought in $71.5 million in total sales. With CSX 2003 leading the docket, 2025’s auction promises another landmark moment for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
