Video: C8 Corvette Crashes Big At Laguna Seca

Shocking video footage shows a C8 Corvette miss a turn at Laguna Seca’s famous corkscrew, crashing big. It’s shocking not only because the collision is violent, but also because the track and that particular turn is so famous, it’s unbelievable anyone would miss it entirely.

Racer killed when his Porsche 911 GT3 RS impacts the wall.

We know people crash on the corkscrew fairly often, but this C8 Corvette driver runs off the track without even turning a little. You can see he cranks the wheel after the mid-engine sports car leaves the pavement behind and is careening through the air, but it’s too late.

The Chevy hits the tire barrier hard, sitting completely vertical momentarily before coming back down to the dirt. Then it rolls once before coming to a rest on its own tires as part of the tire wall tumbles down the steep hill to the track below.

Without the tire wall the crash would’ve been much worse. Thankfully, safety standards calling for soft barriers before hard ones perhaps prevented serious injury or worse in this case.

Some have theorized the C8 Corvette might have suffered brake failure. That would explain why the sports car didn’t seem to slow even a little before entering the corkscrew.

Of course, it’s also possible the driver forgot what was coming up in the course and didn’t realize his error until it was too late. This is why you should really get to know a circuit before you try blasting through it like that or you might find yourself getting really close and intimate with the tire wall.

Hopefully the C8 Corvette driver was okay after the crash. We can say with a high level of confidence the sports car was likely totaled out by the insurance company, so that was the end of the road for it.
