The city of Flint, Michigan has taken a hard stance against street racers and reckless drivers, seizing multiple muscle cars. Now three of the confiscated rides, all Dodge Chargers, are going through the process of being forfeited to authorities so they can be auctioned off.
YouTuber arrested for street racing in a national park.
Surveillance cameras recently caught six vehicles doing smokey donuts on the property. Police arrived and were able to catch three of them, taking the cars and arresting the drivers. Now those Dodge Chargers are headed to the auction block, the proceeds going to the city, reports WNEM.
Apparently, the drivers are accused of doing this sort of thing at multiple locations around Flint.
“We are drawing a clear line in the sand,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “The safety and quality of life for our residents are paramount. We will not allow a few bad actors to destroy property, endanger lives with reckless driving, or hold our neighborhoods hostage. This action is about holding individuals accountable and ensuring our streets are safe for everyone.”
We have mixed feelings on this situation. On the one hand, we think it’s great the city is auctioning off the muscle cars instead of just crushing them in front of news cameras to make some point. After all, the vehicles themselves aren’t problematic.
But the Mopars were doing burnouts at the Ashley Capital Commerce Center, so on private property, not on a public road. We’re not attorneys, but it’s our understanding the property owner would have to press charges for the vehicles to be taken, which probably happened.
An article from WKRC mentions that both public and private property has been damaged by joyriders like these three Dodge Charger drivers who were caught. The mayor claims the total bill is over $100,000. Maybe that’s why the property owner was willing to press charges?
What really gets us is in so many cities, kids have been allowed to do street takeover events, shutting down intersections, with few to no consequences for years. Now, Flint, Michigan is going to drop the hammer on the kind of behavior that was simply tolerated?
It’s an interesting move, especially considering the timing.
