Another holdout compact sedan
In a world that’s crossover-heavy, Volkswagen still builds the venerable Jetta, and what a value it is. The compact sedan is impressively roomy, fun to drive, and conservatively handsome in an ever-shrinking segment. The current 7th generation debuted in 2018 and was refreshed in 2022. For the 2025 model year, the Jetta has been touched up once again with a new grille, new headlights, and a new full-width taillight that looks more cohesive. The cabin also gets tweaked with a new dash, a standard 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the somewhat polarizing climate touch panel.
The Jetta competes with more modern fare like the Honda Civic and the Hyundai Elantra. Those models have hybrid options, while the Jetta does not. The good news is that the 158-hp turbocharged inline-four engine mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission nets some great efficiency. EPA estimates are as high as 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway for some trim levels, which is pretty impressive for a gas-only sedan. The bad news is that the six-speed manual transmission that was available last year is no longer an option for the regular Jetta. For that, you’ll have to upgrade to the pricier and sportier Jetta GLI.

2025 Volkswagen Jetta S feature highlights

The base Jetta S might be the cheapest trim level in the set, but it comes with an expansive standard feature set that includes 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated/folding exterior mirrors, LED headlights/DRLs/taillights, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Safety tech is also impressive, with standard adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian monitoring, and lane keeping assist.

The interior of the Jetta is plenty roomy for five. Total passenger volume is 94.7 cubic feet, and the second row provides 37.4 inches of legroom, ample space to stretch out. The trunk provides 14.1 cubic feet of space, and while that's not the biggest in its class, it's big enough to fit up to five large rolling suitcases. The 60/40 split rear seats also fold down to provide additional space.
Final thoughts
The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta is definitely worth a look. The automaker has given it thoughtful updates, and it remains one of the better sedans to drive, with more space than most of the competition. Now that the cabin has been redone, it looks and feels more upscale and modern than ever. You also don’t have to pay for a pricier hybrid in order to get great fuel efficiency with the Jetta’s impressive 40 mpg highway. The very affordable monthly lease payment only makes it more attractive in July. Before signing the lease agreement, be aware of the costs due at signing, including taxes and registration fees, etc. Read the lease agreement carefully and inquire about potential additional costs at the dealership.
