Meet the Real-Life Loves of the “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ”Cast“ ”(Including Two Couples Who Costar on the Show!)

The cast members of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia have been entertaining fans with dark comedy and satire since 2005. Off-screen, many of them have been in marriages for almost the same amount of time.

The beloved sitcom returned for a 17th season on July 9, bringing back The Gang: Rob McElhenney as Mac, Kaitlin Olson as Dee Reynolds, Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds, Charlie Day as Charlie Kelly and Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds.

While McElhenney and Olson have been married in real life since 2008, they aren’t the only cast members who have tied the knot. Day is married to Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who plays The Waitress, on the series.

In a 2015 interview with Buzzfeed, Ellis recalled the time in 2006 when McElhenney and Olson first told their cast members that they were dating as they congregated in a hotel room during a press junket.

“They were like, ‘We have something to tell you guys,’ and Kaitlin just starts crying and says, ‘I love him. I love him so much, you guys. He’s such a great person. We don’t want you guys to be mad at us because we’re dating and on the show,’ ” the actress said.

She added, “It just made us laugh so hard, because it was such a funny way to reveal that they were dating for the first time. They’re just so great together.”

McElhenney, who is the creator of the show and stars as bartender Mac, and Olson, who plays struggling actress and waitress Dee Reynolds, have never been romantically involved on-screen, but in real life, they've been together since 2006.

Olson first caught McElhenney’s eye in 2002 when she appeared in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2005, he cast Olson in Always Sunny, and they began quietly dating the following year while filming season 2.

The actor proposed to Olson at DeVito’s beach house in Malibu, Calif., in December 2007, and they said “I do” on Sept. 27, 2008, at a vineyard in Malibu in front of family and friends.

In August 2022, the couple filled in for Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with McElhenney stepping in as the host and Olson as a guest. During the episode, they joked around with each other, but also spoke candidly about their longtime love.

"Being in a relationship is very difficult. We've had our ups and downs, we've been married for, coming up on 14 years this September," McElhenney said. "And I can tell you that I love you more now than I did 14 years ago. And that for as hard as it is sometimes, just like in any relationship, I will keep showing up and doing my best, because I love you so much."

They're parents to two sons: Axel Lee, born in September 2010, and Leo Grey, born in April 2012.

Away from the cameras, Howerton — who stars as bartender Dennis Reynolds — is dedicated to his wifeJill Latiano.

They have been together since 2007 and got married on Sept. 8, 2009, at Rancho Las Lomas in Trabuco Canyon, Calif. The theme of their wedding was “Lucky in Love.”

“Glenn and I are always telling each other how lucky we feel to have found each other ... so that is sort of how it [the theme] came about,” Latiano told Green Wedding Shoes in 2010.

Two months after they tied the knot, Latiano appeared on the series as her real-life husband’s love interest, Caylee, in episode 10 of season 5.

The couple share two sons: Miles Robert, born in September 2011, and Isley Ray, born in 2014.

Day, who plays janitor Charlie Kelly, was involved romantically with Ellis, who plays The Waitress, off-screen for several years before they were linked on the show.

The couple first met at a bar in 2001 in New York City. Day told host Sean Evans during a 2017 episode of Hot Ones that he and a friend both saw Ellis and wanted to approach her. So, the actor challenged his friend to an arm-wrestle to determine who could talk to her, and he ultimately won.

Before joining the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the actors costarred as"inbred twins" on an episode of Reno 911! in 2004. Ellis also appears in Day's directorial debut, 2023's Fool’s Paradise.

Now, Ellis told GQ in 2016, she "can’t imagine" not discussing work while at home with her husband.

"It's a really beautiful and exciting part about our relationship; I can't imagine as an actor or an artist not having someone that I couldn't talk to about [the] process," she said. "It's really an enrichment for me."

Day and Ellis got married on March 4, 2006, in New Orleans. They are parents to a son, Russell Wallace, born on Dec. 15, 2011.

DeVito, who stars as Dee and Dennis' millionaire dad Frank Reynolds, split from his wife of over 30 years, Rhea Perlman, in 2017.

The couple, who married in 1982, first announced their separation in October 2012, before reconciling in March 2013. They separated again in March 2017, but have not officially divorced and have no plans to do so.

DeVito told PEOPLE in 2019 that he and Perlman have remained “very close" over the years. “We’re friends,” said the Matilda actor. “We’re happy. Everybody’s happy.”

“We’re still separated, but we see each other often, and we’re still a family,” Perlman told PEOPLE in April 2022. “I’m really, really glad that Danny and I were able to navigate some rough days to be able to have this different kind of relationship. I think it’s pretty rare, but we agree on so many things that it makes sense."

The couple share three adult children: Lucy, Gracie and Jake.
