Guy Ritchie Exits as Director of Amazon’s ‘Road House 2’

Guy Ritchie has exited as the director for Amazon MGM Studios’ sequel movie, Road House 2.

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to return after starring in Amazon’s 2024 remake feature, Road House, which Doug Liman directed.In last year’s remake, Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadside bar in the Florida Keys.

Screenwriter Will Beall, whose recent credits include Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is penning the script for Road House 2. Producers include Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, along with Gyllenhaal and Josh McLaughlin for Nine Stories Productions.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in April that Ritchie had signed on to direct Road House 2. Plot details for the sequel have not yet been shared.

The Road House franchise originated with the 1989 film directed by Rowdy Herrington, starring Patrick Swayze. United Artists’ movie collected $30 million at the box office ($77 million today) and became a cult favorite.

Liman made headlines in January 2024 with his open letter expressing frustration that Amazon MGM was not releasing Road House in theaters. Also starring Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen and Jessica Williams, the movie made its streaming debut on Prime Video two months later, with 80 million worldwide viewers watching in its first eight weeks.

Ritchie’s most recent film, Fountain of Youth, stars John Krasinski and Natalie Portman and debuted on Apple TV+ in May. His forthcoming features include the Lionsgate thriller In the Grey, which stars Henry Cavill and Gyllenhaal, and the black comedy Wife & Dog.
