Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder Competizione Set to Command Over $20 Million at Pebble Beach 2025One of the rarest and most coveted Ferraris ever built is heading to auction during Monterey Car Week, and it could rewrite the record books. Gooding Christie’s has announced that it will offer a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder Competizione, chassis 2383 GT, at its Pebble Beach sale on August 15-16, 2025.
The alloy-bodied Spyder is one of only two competition-spec SWB California Spyders ever produced, making it among the most desirable Ferraris in existence. Gooding Christie’s estimates the car could sell for more than $20 million, positioning it to become one of the auction house’s most valuable lots in its history.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a truly exceptional Ferrari,” said David Gooding, president of Gooding Christie’s. “Its rarity, racing history, and impeccable restoration make it one of the most significant California Spyders we’ve ever presented.”
Delivered new to German gentleman racer Ernst Lautenschlager in 1961, 2383 GT quickly earned its competition credentials. Lautenschlager campaigned the car in European hill climbs and circuit races, including the 1962 Solitude GT in Stuttgart, where it finished fourth in class.
The car passed through prominent collectors in Germany, Switzerland, and the U.S., including renowned Ferrari enthusiast Lee Wilson, before joining the collection of television producer Greg Garrison in the 1980s.
The current owner acquired the Spyder in 1999 and commissioned a comprehensive restoration by Ferrari specialist Dino Cognolato. The car’s Scaglietti-built aluminum bodywork was refinished in Grigio Fumo, paired with tan leather upholstery, a rare removable hardtop, and motorsport touches such as a quick-release fuel filler. Under the hood, its competition-spec Colombo V12—the highest-compression engine fitted to any SWB California Spyder—produces approximately 280 horsepower.
Since its restoration, 2383 GT has been a fixture at prestigious events including the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Le Mans Classic, and Concours of Elegance. Remarkably, this will be its first appearance at Monterey Car Week and its first public sale in more than 50 years.
Collectors will have the rare chance to bid on a Ferrari that perfectly blends competition pedigree, originality, and exclusivity—qualities that could easily push its price into record-breaking territory.
